How are your new angel fish doing?
Hey RM.
They new ones are doing fine.
Out of the 3 blacks, they already spawned.
Crazy thing is, it was the 2 males with 1 female!!
That just never happens. 2 females and 1 male is almost common, but in
30 yrs I've never seen nor heard of a 2m amd 1f trio.
Anyway, you would think with having 2 males fertilizing, you'd hardly
have any that were unfertile.
However, most of them weren't.
The mother did a great job at fanning and getting only the
unfertilized eggs. The 2 males, not so much. They were sloppy and
would grab viable eggs too.
Before long, most were gone and then they gave up.
However, they never stopped guarding the common spawning area in that
tank (the intake for the canister filter).
They are still a trio too.
I believe it was last saturday when they spawned, so they could go
again this weekend, or wait another week.
It's obvious that they're still in spawning mode though.
They're a DD x G cross. The 2 males show only pure black. Gorgeous
too.
The female shows a teal/gold shimmer in a brindle type pattern, under
a layer of black. Otherwise she looks black.
I LOVE it. I really like the brindle pattern anyway, and it's coming
through on her like that.
I do have pics and it shows up well.
When the sun or light hits the top of her sides (above and along the
lateral line), it shimmers that lovely blue-green that the DD blacks
have, and then a shimmer of gold too. It's very pretty.
I called up their breeder and asked if he'll be at the next swap meet
in April, and he said yeah...he'd be there with more of them too.
Yippy!
I need at least another female or two.
The gold female that I got with the blacks has taken a liking to my
gold pearlscale male.
She does the weirdest thing, as has done this since I got her.
She nudges the sides of other angels and nibbles (like discus fry
snacking off mom and pop's sides).
She not nipping them, like get out of my way, or that's my food...it's
more of a swim up to them....nudge with her mouth, then start a gentle
pecking like she's pecking algae off a leaf.
I've seen her swim up to another angel and just check out the sides.
It's just not a normal angelfish behavior.
She also like to be right next to the others...like uncomfortable type
close.
If I remember, I'll ask her breeder if he happened to raise some golds
with discus.
Fish do learn things from one another by example.
I've seen it (and felt it!) with bettas many times. I had a biter that
tought all the other females to bite.....and in one place too.
The underside of your arm, on the inside, just above the elbo. That's
a tender place, and let me tell you, bettas can PINCH.
I've had a red mark a couple times too.
Being angelfish are "thinking" fish, it's very possible this gold
female learned a discus behavior.
She made herself a pest with the black ones in QT because of it.
All in all, they're doing very well.
I'm going to give my son a few of my other angels that I've had. He's
now got a 20g, a 10g, and a 3, running.
Not running, a 2 1/2gnd a 1g.
One of them was stunted when purchased. He had to be.
Others bought the same time grew much larger, and he stayed tiny.
He thinks he's huge. LOL....like a mini pinscher having the attitude
of a rottweiler. = )~
He's a dominant personality and will be better with a single female
(both are going to my son's).
The two have paired up before to spawn, but the female never chose
which male (she's spawned with the gold pearlscale before), she to
spawn with. The small marble/pearl cross got into the middle of their
second spawning and then it never happened at all.
So who knows. If they do, I'd take the eggs from my son's tank and
raise them here anyway.
================================
Those angels sure have been busy. ;-) Surely you're going to end up with
fry before summer. Fish probably do learn by example. Other critters do.
My son never got interested in fish or pets like myself and his father did.
When you get pics up give us the URL. I like Photobucket.
All is well here since I started using 1/2 rain water collected from the
roofs of the outbuildings and greenhouses. Not one fish has died since and
I'm feeding the frozen foods more often now too, mainly blood worms and
brine shrimp.
