Yep, usenet was great for this back then. What's happened is that the
assholes that run the commercial forums have blasted the newsgroups with
garbage to the point that many of them are not really useable.

Decisions are made by people who have time, not by people who have
talent.
Talented people are too busy fixing problems created by people who make
decisions.
I use thunderbird with "right click ignore", to ignore whole threads.
Plus, if you filter on address, etc. you get rid of the "dummies."
But yes, a$$holes can ruin things--just look at our politicians ...
