You might consider adding salt, too, though opinions differ on the
matter, so research before making a decision.
Long ago, in my first foray into aquariums, I had both salt and fresh
water tanks. One freshwater fish, a convict, had a case of ich not
unlike what you describe above for your platy. The fish had no fins
left to speak of, and was covered in ich.
On the advice of my LFS owner, I dipped the convict into the salt
water tank twice a day for 30 seconds at a time. In under a week, the
ich was cured. A few weeks after that, the fins had grown back and the
fish was perfectly healthy. Oddly enough, his scales all had a
colorful shimmer to them, too - far prettier than the basic black &
white stripe motif of most convicts.
