If you do buy a Goldfish...in a 12 g tank you could only house one.

Bummer! I'm debating on what to do now. Are you saying I shouldn't add
*any* other fish - even other types - with him in the tank?

If that truly is the case, and adding more would be detrimental to the
fish's environment, I think I'll call a little local store and see if
they'll take him - although I've already gotten to like him!

If ever I do screw up in the future and ask a store to take back a fish, how
do they feel about that? Wouldn't they be nervous considering it could have
disease or toxins that they don't know about? I'm surprised they might take
fish off anybody they don't know.

Hi Mary.
Yes, that would mean you couldn't put anything else in with him.
Many shops will take in fish that appear to be healthy. Most will give you
store credit.
If the store sold you a Goldie for your 12g tank...tell them they neglected to
tell you that you wouldn't be able to house anything else in with it and that
it would actually grow too large for that 12g anyway.
Do some research on proper Goldfish care, and then go back in armed with
knowledge. Shops tend to treat you differently when you know what you're doing.
It's sad and wrong, but it's true.
