A blast with a garden hose is good for cleaning out the mechanical

But how do you deal with the carbon? Do you have the model where the
carbon is easily removable?
Ah, good point, a garden hose doesn't do anything for the carbon. My
main tank is heavily planted, and gets regular water changes, so I
don't worry much about having fresh carbon. In the Eclipse systems,
though, it's an easy enough thing to peel back the filter floss and
replace the carbon if one cared to. Don't know about in the Penguin
units - never tried it there.
