Just to add to Jim,

I find with my Jewels the spawning happens at erratic intervals. But usually
when I do a large water change with aged water it sparks them off. I don't
have a special diet for them, they do just fine on normal flakes & pellets.
Just keep your water quality good. Oh and also they seem to like a strong
current in the tank. HTH
