My recommendation would be not to use sponge filters, but to tie the
tanks together and use a common filter system, ideally a wet/dry, though
for just 33 gal total, you could probably use a single canister. It
depends on the type of fry, of course, just what would be the best
filter system (fish sensitivity to water chemistry, agressiveness toward
feeding, quantity of fry, etc.) but to raise lots of fry properly, it is
best to have a high turnover of water and a high capacity filter
system. That way you don't have to worry about overfeeding resulting in
an overwhelmed filter, which assures you can feed adequately and they
all get plenty to eat. This worked for me in a somewhat distant past
when raising Emperor Tetras and resulted in batches more quickly
reaching a viable sales size with far lower mortality than I had
experienced previously. Of course, I was using 2-gal bare tanks for the
fry, not 5.5-gal. Just my 0.02$ worth. Best luck on your endeavor!
