After about 20 years I'm getting back into fishkeeping, and
much has changed in that time. I want to set up a tank with
central or south american (probably dwarf) cichlids plus a few
other occupants and I need a refresher course in aquarium
know-how before I do it. Can anyone recommend any books that
are must-haves or highly useful either on cichlids or
aquarium-keeping in general that would give me the information
I need to know what I'm doing? Any suggestions for books that
are particularly inspiring would be good too.

Enjoying Cichlids 2nd edition I believe is a one of the best all
around books out there right now.

Enjoying Cichlids has a lot of excellent detailed information that is
very difficult to find elsewhere. But it's an anthology of articles
written by various authors, and they are not shy about setting forth
some rather eccentric views on various issues, e.g. feeding. For a
refresher course, I would instead recommend either Baensch,
freshwater Atlas, volume I, or Loiselle's the Cichlid Aquarium. Of
course, all these books are worth owning.

Just my take,
