Can anyone suggest a simple/inexpensive chiller that will bring my
temp from
about 85F to 78F ? I am fairly new to this hobby and am bewildered

The mag drive is a model 7. I have my overflow going to a 5 gal sump,
in
the sump is a Sealife skimmer with it's own pump that empties back into
the
pump. Then the mag drive 7 pumps the water through the UV and about 5
feet
back up to the top of the tank. According to the Mag drive box, 5.5'
should
give me 400 g/hour. I don't think I am over stressing the pump but tell
me
if you disagree. As for the lights, they get pretty warm.
Should I put the UV on a timer and run it only for an hour a day ?
Would it
still be effective ? Does it really heat the water that much ?

the thing with UV's is for them to work the water has to stay very close to
a very bright light for a good period of time, so one of a few things is
happening, its either rated for the flow your using, and its worming the
water up or its underrated in which not only is it adding heat, but its
putting even more back pressure on the pump, you havent added for
backpressure of the UV to get 400gph so its probibly less. its not all that
hard to estimate the resistance as an additional 2ft of head, and its
probibly more. the other side is UV's generally dont belong in a reef. what
good they do is offset by the bad they do which is killing off your plankton

in the end removing the UV and placing a fan over the sump and maybee one
next to the light bulbs, will probibly fix your heat problems. ive had more
light over my 37T and the fans have done most of the chilling needed, every
now and then it requires a little more help, and a DIY TEC based chiller
does good. i have ran that tank with 2 175W mh bulbs and additional PC and
NO bulbs all at once. including last summer and i live in SoCal so its not
exactly cold here durring the summer.
