recurrent popeye
I have an oranda who developed popeye in one eye a couple of weeks ago and I
assumed he had just knocked it because it was only the one eye and it healed
within 48 hours with no medication at all. Then a week after that had
healed, he developed popeye in both eyes. This time I treated with
Interpet's anti internal bacteria medication (I'm in the UK) and within a
couple of days of treating it went away again. It then happened again and I
treated with the same medication and it disappeared. However now I have
noticed popeye developing again this afternoon.
My water parameters are perfect (ammonia/nitrite 0, nitrate 5) and my tank
is adequately stocked (over 10 gallons per fish). I do two 25% water changes
a week and they are fed a varied and good quality diet. No other fish have
shown the same symptoms.
I'm at a loss as to what to do now. Other than the bagel type bulges around
his eyes he seems perfectly healthy. He is active, his colour is bright,
he's eating as usual and seems happy.
Is there anything that would cause recurrent popeye like this and what can I
do about it?
