Very new to all of this
Annie,
Don't know how small you Goldfish are but I will assume they are in the 2 to
5 cm range because you say the tank still looks empty and you have three
mollies and the guppies still in the tank.
The rule of thumb (ROT), and this is just a guide line, but it has proven
its worth over many years, is that you keep one goldfish per 38liters.
Needless to say, you are already over stocked just in Goldfish alone.
If you want you Goldfish to grow you will need this stocking level. Also,
since Goldfish are pretty dirty fish this ROT allows for their growth and
for their well being because of the amount of waste they produce. Most of
us believe Goldfish should be kept only with other Goldfish. The varieties
that Goldfish proven and their varied color combinations should give almost
any variety that anyone can desire.
The "bubble chambers" on our undergravel filter (UGF) are called risers.
Make sure the airstone or air release is as close to the bottom of the tube
as possible.
No, a female betta should not be put in the tank. She will pick on the
Goldfish.
You also need to get a test kit to measure your pH, ammonia levels in the
tank, nitrite levels, KH level, and General Hardness. Goldfish do better in
hard water (200 to 300ppm GH). Your KH should be 80 to 120 ppm. pH between
7 and 8 and ammonia should be zero, as well as your nitrites. Nitrates are
usually kept in the 10ppm range by weekly water changes of 10 to 30% with
conditioned water.

Hi all,
Last weekend, we bought a large bay shaped tank which holds 150 litres of
water.
It has an under gravel filter with two "bubble chambers" (don't know the
correct terminology) -- one on either side at the rear of the tank. In
the
tank we also have an air line thingy which just makes a pretty bubble wall
effect, about an inch of gravel, two large ornaments, two large plants --
still waiting for another large ornament which is on order.
We filled the tank with softened water (we live in a very hard water area)
and put water conditioner in and have kept guppies alive in the tank all
week as per the instructions from our local pet shop.
I went back today to get some real fish and ended up with 5 goldfish (the
small variety) and 3 molly's. The guppies are still in the tank as well
but
the tank looks bare as though it needs more fish but we have the
recommended
amount.
Do you reckon I could get away with adding more fish and what other fish
live harmoniously with goldfish?
I bought two male siamese fighting fish for the kids but both of them are
in
separate tanks in their bedrooms.
Would I be able to put female fighter fish in the main tank with the
goldfish?
thanks in advance. I look forward to learning lots more on this subject!
