That's interesting because a few days ago
I talked about my one red dwarf gourami
looking lonely because he couldn't stay
away from his reflection all day. People
here said that they are aggressive toward
each other and that having only 1 is fine.
If there are no plants (ie, no way to stake
a claim to some territory) then they will be
less aggressive. Maybe I understood
wrong?

One is fine and will live a very happy life. Only having two can be a
problem tho. The dominant fish will pick on the weaker one till it
kills it. But if you have three or more than the dominant fish does not
spend all its time picking on the one fish but spreads it out over all
the other gouramis. One nice thing about gouramis is the fact that they
will not bother with any other type of fish in the tank. One more thing
is they have distinctive personality and like their cousins, bettas, can
range from the tank terror to the tank sweety.
