Puffers should ONLY be in a species tank ... none others. They are
aggressive, period.

what do you mean by a species tank?

A tank dedicated to a specific species?

Thats what i was leaning towards thinking and yet all the information i can
find states that you dont NEED to do this, ie if youre careful what you
house them with?

I hear that Colomesus Asellus are less aggressive than other types of
puffers. They are also freshwater.

Thats the boyo i was looking at, or possibly one of the spotted pufferfish.

The colomesus are just too damn cute. I was going to get a couple from
my LFS, but the whole lot died of white spot before I could even
purchase them!

Just don't put them in with angelfish as their long fins won't last long.

Yep, had sussed out the "long fins attract puffer nips" bit :-)

I am planning to put him in a 190 litre trigon (corner) tank when we get it.

All on his own?
