When you say a vertical rock surface, do you mean a slanting rock like the
Angelfish spawn on. I have a 12 inch terra cotta flower pot plate laying
flat on the sand floor. Do you think this plate is good to use for their
spawning site"

I have a pair that have spawned 3-4 times. Eggs hatched last time, and
they
moved the wrigglers into a pit. None have survived so far. They're in an
"aggressive" 6ft tank, with spawning Convicts and Blue Acaras.

Try to ensure you've got a pair, then they need a vertical rock surface,
which can be in the open. Mine do the shimmy very often. Don't think the
water conditions are that critical...ie the usual for SA cichlids, water
changes weekly etc. I've never done anything to encourage spawning
