TEA TREE OIL, Melaleuca controversy
Use of this oil in various formulations should proceed with caution for
several
reasons.
There are numerous adverse reactions in other animal species.
There are some adverse reactions in fish.
It is related to the turpentine family.
It is a lipophilic oil that is absorbed across the skin, both dry and
mucosal.
It is an oil related to those with hepatoxicity and neurotoxicity.
It is not all that effective compared to other medications.
Use in land animals is on a limited area of the skin. Fish are immersed
in this for
periods of time. Ingestion appears to cause more toxicity than contact.

I really like Aquarium Pharmaceutical test kits... but at least the
melaleuca stuff
is a recycled old time remedy. I dont have any idea what this pimafix
is, but it is
another oil of some kind. GF can smell really well. I just wouldnt be
using this
stuff just cause it is new. there are normal remedies, malachite,
methlene blue and
PP that work GREAT. MB for example is used to treat GF eggs against
fungus. Ingrid

OK, I wimped out, didn't go with the Potassium Permanganate. I did not
want
to wipe out the Biofilter, as some had suggested. So I picked up some
Pimafix and Melafix for the boys. Only the one large fish has a
noticeable
fungal infection (fuzzy white spot on his snout, but the others are
showing
signs of a secondary bacterial infection. I applied 7 tsps of the
Pimafix
yesterday and a good deal of the fuzz was gone this morning. I thought I
saw
a brown spot of the center of the fungus this morning. I applied a
second
dose of Pimafix this afternoon and the brown spot is gone. Now there is
just
a hole where the white fuzz had been, like a bad zit.
The Pimafix says to apply for seven days, but I've noticed that this
stuff
really freaks the fish out when you add it. Does this stuff sting or is
it
just the smell that bothers them? Secondly, the blurb says I can use the
Melafix and Pimafix together. What's the Melafix going to do for me (the
fishies) that Pimafix does not.
Comments from Pimafix/Melafix users appreciated.
My fish has no ill effects from melafix at all. I have not used pima fix
as of yet.
I used it on fish who was in a q-tank because he was new and he had a
cotton like fluff comeing from a gill. And Melifix took care of that.
Other than that, I have use it for torn fins on danios, minnows and a
really sick ram.
If I had a real sick fish, I would have other medications on standby.
And if the fish was really bad I would use both. I did that with the
Ram. took 3 weeks but he made it. I really didn't think he was going to
live he was old. He lived another year and a half!
I would not mix anything with PP though. If you are still thinking of
trying that. I used Ingrid's sugestion on th estock solution and it
worked well for me.
