Salt really isn't necessary to add to a freshwater tank but the normal
dosing for salt when not using it for medicinal purposes is 1
teaspoon per gallon. Aquarium salt or non-iodized table salt can be
used and should be dissolved in some tank water before being added
slowly to the tank.

Remember that salt doesn't evaporate and can only be removed through
water changes.
