Sounds more like you're describing an undergravel filter? If so, the top
of the tube must be below the waterline to allow water to rise up and out
of it, and yes, you can trim it down as needed.
If this doesn't answer your question, sorry. Clarify the type of
filter for me?
No, it's not an underground, it's a Hydro 1 filter. 4 inch in diameter
sponge type. Cindy answered it though, it must be submerged. Thanks for
