If you refer to the "Cookie Cutter" setups given on cichlid-forum, trust
me, many people in the actual forum section have commented on how insane
some of those are. Supposedly they're going to update, but haven't seen
any action on that at all. So I would definately view their article
section with a critical eye. The forum section does have some good people
for various types of cichlids like Tanganyikans, but again it's always
good to look for multiple opinions on multiple sites before doing much.
And of course when it comes to living creatures, there's always individual
personalities, particularly when it comes to stocking, that can make even
a supposedly "good match" go horribly awry.
