Do they need a heater in the tank?

Water temp should be 78-80 degrees F. Anything less and they are
lethargic. So if you can't make the room they are in that warm then yes,
you need a heater. What size tank are yours in? A 25 watt heater is used
by some in a 2 gal size tank. In smaller tanks there is a new small
heater here you could check out:

Tank is 5gal but I want to put one or two simple tropicals in - maybe
platties - so I'll use a heater.

A 25 watt heater will do. I have a blue male betta in a 5 gal and just put
2 cory cats in with him today. The betta goes after the littlest one but
should get used to them in a day or so. I LOVE cory cats.
