Yes you definitely need a heater just to keep the water temp at a
constant level. You could probably get away with it for awhile because
you live in a warm climate, but you should get one. I can lend some
insight on the broken heaters, I've had quite a few smashed to bits, it
only happens when the oscars are "spooked". Then again they only were
capable of doing this when they were already quite large.
