Yes, I do the same with the rubber maid containers. They make
excellent emergency or q-tanks at a great price. And, when not in use
they store all the many extras that one acquires in this fish keeping
hobby. If you can manage to find the clear containers thats even
better because you can actually see the fish through them. I think
they work great!
