Default Skimmer Operation.

I have a question about my skimmer, I bought a AKS brand skimmer, it uses a
power head to push the water and air into it, anyhow, the tube that connects
to the power head is a very loose fit and the bubble that collect in the
main container seem to leak out from this water input tube and not climb
past it towards the collection cup. To me it seems to be faulty, but never
having used one before I am not sure if it is supposed to work this way.
Also the water level in the main tube seems low, and before anyone asks
about the power head, the unit I am using is the one recommended by the LFS
to suit the model skimmer. All in all it seems a bit rough around the edges
to me, like the pipe that connects to the powerhead was squirting water all
over the place, I had to fit some clamps to the tubes to make it a tight
fit, this stopped the water from squirting out, but the input tube being a
loose fit makes me think that the glue/resin used to hold the whole thing
together wasn't put on the input tube, purhaps it's a one off stuff up, but
it does mean that untill the unit is fixed or replaced I have no skimmer at
work on my newly setup tank.

So, if it is stuffed, just how long can my tank hold out without a skimmer
?, the tank is a 1 day old setup with live rock. current water condition
readings are fairly good, but not perfect.
