I have a wild fish (bluegill) that was caught with a fishing pole and hook.
It's been doing okay in my tank (eating and behavior), but the hook sores above its mouth have now caused a swelling in one side of its nose. It looks to me like some sort of infection. My water isn't great (nitrates are pretty high--I'm doing some water changes but have had some trouble) but the other fish seem to be doing fine. I was just wondering if it's possible to administer antibiotics to this fish, and if they can be purchased without going to a vet. Thanks for any tips! Jonathan |

Jonathan Antbiotic availability is country dependant. In the UK you can only get pet antibiotics through a vet In the USA they are readily available from pet stores or at least they were when I was last there! |

Found some, although I'm not sure they will work for my particular problem.
Trying it now. Thanks. Jonathan "Limnophile" wrote in message ... Most pet stores sell antibiotics for fish. "Jonathan Wood" wrote in message link.net... Charles,
My vet told me that antibiotics in the water don't do much good for an infection in the fish, they will kill stuff in the water. there are various medicated foods, if I were going to use one I would get them from Dr. Johnson's place, www.koivet.com Lots of good info there as well. Thanks--I checked out the site. One LFS was a little rude when I suggested that medicated foods might be more effective than antibotics in the water. I don't know if the product you mentioned (which appears designed for koi) would work for me, or even if my fish would eat it. I haven't found anything like that locally--I'll look around a bit more. Thanks. Jonathan |

jk,
Throw him back in, and let nature decide. Well, first of all, it wasn't nature that caught him on a hook, and second, I'd like to keep him (along with my other wild-caught fish). Jonathan |

Jonathan Jonathan if this has a whitish appearance it is likely a fungal infection. You can net the fish and while gently holding the fish in the net apply some meth. blue or other anti fungal medication directly to the spot uisng a q tip. Rick |
