Default Adding coarse salt to a tank?

Hiya

My fish have just gone through a SEROUS ick infection and I somehow
managed to cure it with some protozin. My uncle says I should add some
salt to my tank (coarse salt) and I have heard it is a good idea but
how much should I add? The tank is 45 gallons / 170 litres????

Thanks

Paul
