Default 400 Watt MH

My son just gave me a MH setup with reflector. It was a gardening grow light
that he bought several years ago. It has a Phillips MH400/U Bulb. Is this
the type bulb I should be using? Are there better options? I can't believe
how big the ballast is for it. Way bigger than flouresent ballasts. Looking
for advise.

that bulb will do exactly what it is intended to do GROW unwanted algae.
you are better off getting a new bulb with a spectrum more suited for a reef
tank.
