Hello,
About a week and a bit ago I checked my tank pH which was 7.9. This was after three and a half weeks cycling. Now a further week and a half on, the pH is 7.7. I don't believe it is a good sign that it is dropping but what causes it to drop and how is it controlled / raised again? Thanx Miguel |

0.2 of a log unit?? Are you serious?
Nothing to worry about. I wouldn't consider that a drop, in fact, it's probably bordering on the accuracy of your meter. "Miguel" wrote in message ... the pH of tanks tends to be low during the initialization of the system. as
it matures the pH will come up to a balanced reading. hth kc "Miguel" wrote in message ... Hello, About a week and a bit ago I checked my tank pH which was 7.9. Absolutely serious hey...
I'm new to this game and as far as I was aware the correct pH range should be in the region of 8.0 - 8.4. Incidently, I don't think the meter was wrong. Checked on two different meters at work - 7.76 / 7.71. Ta for the reply tho ;-) stoutman .@. wrote in message news:ZDRVb.206018$Rc4.1685690@attbi_s54... 0.2 of a log unit?? Are you serious? You are more than likely have an organic problem producing acids lowering the pH or maybe
an excess CO2 problem, both common to new tanks. This will usually go away with time. Take a sample of water and aerate it for a few hrs, as if it was boiling and see if the pH rises, if so you have excess CO2. The CO2 can be from two sources, generation in the tank, as it is new and there is allot of organic break down, poor skimming and or poor circulation, all will lower the pH. It is winter, so it could also be a high room air CO2 problem. Take a look at this on room air CO2. Also what is your Alk. If it gets below 7.6 I would take some action to get it backup. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...2002/short.htm -- Boomer Want to talk chemistry ?
