Good way to Culture Infusoria

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone out there had a good method of creating a infusoria
culture.

Reason being I am thinking of spawning my beautiful male betta

The room temp around my area now is like 20 C . any advice would be good.

All i know is that i should use some old aquarium water and put it in a
clear cup, add lettuce and leave in sunlight. Tried that but didn;t notice
the film forming.

I just want to make a successful culture so i can prepare to fed the fry
when I do spawn.

something that worked for me one time was using a five gallon bucket, some
old
water, and then rinsing off my filters in it and letting it set for a few
weeks.
it worked well for raising two batches of fry for me. (actually... it's
still
sitting, months later, no water change, with a group of ghost shrimp in it
now).
just kinda ended up as one of those "i wonder..." cultured experiments.
trying
to get the ghost shrimp to lay eggs now. i never did try the lettuce
thing, but
i seem to recall reading something about blanching it first.

I did exactly what you did... I used aquarium water and a small piece of
lettuce in a gallon jar, except the "instructions" were to leave it in
sunlight. I got loads of infusoria! Good luck.

Despite claims that you can "see them" they are truly microscopic. I got
out my daughter's microscope and observed them in drops of water. None
after the first day and by day 5, thousands. There is a visible "white"
film that forms around the plant matter. Is the white film the infusoria?
I've read that it is their waste product and I've read that it is the actual
infusoria. Either way, it's an indicator that they are present. I'd say
that I was getting useable amounts within 5 days of starting. Another thing
though, I had java moss in the rearing tank. I think that lots of uneaten
infusoria took up refuge in the java moss - multiplying and providing more
of a constant food source for my fry. I'm not sure how long an infusoria
batch will last... but it lasted long enough to get the fry to the stage
that they would eat other things (5 days?). I had GREAT success with boiled
egg yolk as a secondary food.

Most are microscopic, but some paramecium get more than 1 mm long. They
can be seen with the naked eye.
