I planted my Pond lillys last year in large 1' diameter pots. I
fertilized them and it appears that they are all roots now and filling the pots. How and when should I propagate them? I would prefer to do it soon because I prefer not to go swimming next spring (brrrr). I also need to know how to propagate them. Any advise or website info appreciated. Rick |

Rick You can do it now, only you'll probably have a lot of set back, unless it is cool and you have a shady place to do it. Be prepared to remove the old pads quickly once back in the pond if they dried out too much during repotting. You will see where the growth starts, looks kind of like the face of a lobster to me, cut back from the growth about 2" and try to leave as much dirt around them, without disturbing the roots. Put the cut edge right up against the side of potting container. I'd use a bigger pot. I use baskets lined with weed cloth that are 12" X 18" and a lily will still grow all the way across that 18" in one season. The shadier the pond the slower the growth. Lily pond I divide the hardies every year, Koi pond, more shade, once every 2 years. ~ jan See my ponds and filter design: http://users.owt.com/jjspond/ ~Keep 'em Wet!~ Tri-Cities WA Zone 7a To e-mail see website |

Some of you may recall my trials and tribulations with my lily pond and the
pH? This year I decided not to empty and muck it out. There wasn't much muck anyway, and I'm hoping the bottom drain & skimmer are going to be connected to an out of pond filter soon (no digging has started) ![]() with aged water, the pH wouldn't spike. Well, pH was 9.0 today, so aged water didn't fix that.... Dang! Not sure why this happens every spring, by now the cement blocks around the edge, after 5 years, have surely leached all they're gonna leach. Dang! Back to water changes, which seem to fix the problem. ~ jan ----------------- (Do you know where your water quality is?) |
