Removing water from pond over winter

I just inherited a pond and have a couple of questions

First there is no fish in the pond, it's a liner, 15 foot stream, 18
- 20 in deep, and its about 400 - 500gals

I live in 7B zone.

The pond has a lot of hair algae and am wondering if I can just
Scube it off the rocks.
After the removal of the algae I want to drain the pond completely and
leave it empty over the winter. Is that ok and if yes should I do
anything to the liner?

I figure that I'll revitalize the pond in April.

BTW: There are rocks at the bottom of the pond. Should I leave the,
in when the pond is empty
or take them out?

Personally, I prefer to leave it there. Attached algae Good, free-floating
algae Bad. I understand others feel differently :-)

IF you drain it, don't even bother trying to get the algae off until
spring - it'll come off more easily then. Otherwise, the only thing I'd do
is make sure there's some way for anything that might fall into the hole to
get out again. Otherwise you're likely to find it full of dead things in
the spring.

BTW: There are rocks at the bottom of the pond. Should I leave the,
in when the pond is empty
or take them out?

Again, it's a preference issue. I say "out".

I would wait until spring and then give it a good cleaning and refilling.
If you leave it empty it will be full of leaves, litter and probably a few
dead things as Derek said. We removed all the gravel and rocks from our
pond. It was too hard to clean with them on the bottom. Everything
collected there and couldn't be removed.

Kurt,

Removing the water will expose your liner to the Sun's UV rays and
other things that drop from the sky. Leaks can be a pain to fix. One
Winter wouldn't be a problem, but emptying it every year could shorten
the liner's lifespan.

I'd leave it as is, drain in the spring, remove rocks and go from
there. ~ jan
