New ENERGY EFFICIENT Fluorescent bulbs

I notice my LFS has some set ups with regular Fluorescent Spiral lights, the
ones that are supposed to be Energy Efficient, using a fraction of energy
from regular bulbs(100watts=~15watts).

His coral looks great.

I wonder, if I replace my MH, not only will I get the same result but also
lower my electric bill. I could even increase the light outPut with the same
money.

Any Comments?

They are not going to be better than regular
fluorescent lights. They won't replace MH light.

If you want to use fluorescent lighting, go with VHO
lighting.

You want 3 to 6 watts of lighting over your reef
tank, 3 being too low for most things.

You can ignore the "(100watts=~15watts)", as nobody
in their right mind is going to use regular
incandescent lights to light a reef tank.

I was hoping to hear the contrary, I guess we are not as advance to get
the same spectrum output and be green (ecosafe) as well.

There are LED fixtures out there now, but they are well over a couple of
thousand dollars each still..... Being so "new" and all.

It will be interesting to see how they do over the
long term. An as they get older, they will slowly
dim, but then so do a number of other types of bulbs.
