How are your new angel fish doing?

Crazy thing is, it was the 2 males with 1 female!! That just never happens. 2 females and 1 male is almost common, but in 30 yrs I've never seen nor heard of a 2m amd 1f trio. Anyway, you would think with having 2 males fertilizing, you'd hardly have any that were unfertile. However, most of them weren't. The mother did a great job at fanning and getting only the unfertilized eggs. The 2 males, not so much. They were sloppy and would grab viable eggs too. Before long, most were gone and then they gave up. However, they never stopped guarding the common spawning area in that tank (the intake for the canister filter). They are still a trio too. I believe it was last saturday when they spawned, so they could go again this weekend, or wait another week. It's obvious that they're still in spawning mode though. They're a DD x G cross. The 2 males show only pure black. Gorgeous too. The female shows a teal/gold shimmer in a brindle type pattern, under a layer of black. Otherwise she looks black. I LOVE it. I really like the brindle pattern anyway, and it's coming through on her like that. I do have pics and it shows up well. When the sun or light hits the top of her sides (above and along the lateral line), it shimmers that lovely blue-green that the DD blacks have, and then a shimmer of gold too. It's very pretty. I called up their breeder and asked if he'll be at the next swap meet in April, and he said yeah...he'd be there with more of them too. Yippy! I need at least another female or two. The gold female that I got with the blacks has taken a liking to my gold pearlscale male. She does the weirdest thing, as has done this since I got her. She nudges the sides of other angels and nibbles (like discus fry snacking off mom and pop's sides). She not nipping them, like get out of my way, or that's my food...it's more of a swim up to them....nudge with her mouth, then start a gentle pecking like she's pecking algae off a leaf. I've seen her swim up to another angel and just check out the sides. It's just not a normal angelfish behavior. She also like to be right next to the others...like uncomfortable type close. If I remember, I'll ask her breeder if he happened to raise some golds with discus. Fish do learn things from one another by example. I've seen it (and felt it!) with bettas many times. I had a biter that tought all the other females to bite.....and in one place too. The underside of your arm, on the inside, just above the elbo. That's a tender place, and let me tell you, bettas can PINCH. I've had a red mark a couple times too. Being angelfish are "thinking" fish, it's very possible this gold female learned a discus behavior. She made herself a pest with the black ones in QT because of it. All in all, they're doing very well. I'm going to give my son a few of my other angels that I've had. He's now got a 20g, a 10g, and a 3, running. Not running, a 2 1/2gnd a 1g. One of them was stunted when purchased. He had to be. Others bought the same time grew much larger, and he stayed tiny. He thinks he's huge. LOL....like a mini pinscher having the attitude of a rottweiler. = )~ He's a dominant personality and will be better with a single female (both are going to my son's). The two have paired up before to spawn, but the female never chose which male (she's spawned with the gold pearlscale before), she to spawn with. The small marble/pearl cross got into the middle of their second spawning and then it never happened at all. So who knows. If they do, I'd take the eggs from my son's tank and raise them here anyway. ================================ Those angels sure have been busy. ;-) Surely you're going to end up with fry before summer. Fish probably do learn by example. Other critters do. My son never got interested in fish or pets like myself and his father did. When you get pics up give us the URL. I like Photobucket. All is well here since I started using 1/2 rain water collected from the roofs of the outbuildings and greenhouses. Not one fish has died since and I'm feeding the frozen foods more often now too, mainly blood worms and brine shrimp. ~~~~ }((((* ~~~ }{{{{(ö |

Yrs ago (like17+) I got my angel stock from a great breeder in IL. I had such lovely (breeding pairs) of blacks from his stock. I recently found out how well known his fish were, and that others too were still missing his stock. He disappeared and no one heard from him again (crazy story). These blacks are quite similar to his. It's the shape of the body and head..and meaty, with proportioned fins. What a bummer. There was an angel breeder in Nashville who turned out the most beautiful gold, marble and pearlscale angels and he too vanished off the radar screen. I think sometimes the local market gets flooded and they just stop breeding. I haven't seen any angels in any of the stores in awhile now. The last were sickly looking, very thin and inactive. Some angel's have a slightly different head / mouth shape that is too "pouty" for me. Not anywhere near the Altum's stuck up face. Does that make any sense, lol. Yes, I know the shape you mean. :-) I don't care for Altums, but can see their beauty. I like a more smoother curve of the head and mouth. I was so happy to hear that this breeder will be at the next swap meet, and he's bring more blacks! Yippy, yea, yahooooo! I told him I'll see ya there with lots of cash! He laughed. My son will be taking some of my current stock to make room. The ones not worthy of breeding, and also a female silver pearlscale, and a marble / pearlscale cross that was stunted when purchased. Those 2 last ones have paired up before, so they might for him too. The new female gold, and the male gold pearlscale, and a smokey male will stay. The smokey male will probably have to be moved though. He's the alpha of the other angels and the 2 males of the 3-some of blacks have a good go from time to time. There is a definite line down the middle of the tank. Either one crosses that line and it gets it. Neither needs the stress. With having the other 2 golds on the other side to them selves, I'm hoping they'll pair up. I sure am hoping for angel fry. Lots and lots! There are NONE in this area that'll stay alive more than a week or two. Spindly, thin, crappy things to boot. Angels of really nice quality coming back into the area is a long time coming! If only I could find the same qualilty of pearlscales. They pop up now and then. Even more rare...quality ones. I have a gorgeous gold male pearl that I have been trying to pair up with another pearlscale. He paired up with a silver female pearlscale, but the eggs got eaten (twice). Then they never spawned again. I've seen gold pearlscales since, just crappy quality though and a lot of deformaties. = ( Yep! Same here. The last angels I saw were a few months ago and all looked like underfed culls. Crap. Nothing I would take for free. At the next swap in April I'll be on the lookout for a couple more black females from this breeder. If my male perlscale paired up with a black female, that's fine and dandy with me, and the gene pool. = )~ Are you going to start removing the eggs or try to let the parents raise them? |

Good to hear your satisfied with the angels. Petland only had 4 large angels for sale today........and if I was going to be around here long I would have bought them...about the size in diameter of what a soda can is.......for $8.99 each and they were listed as black marble angels. |

If they were the only fish in the tank, I'd give them a shot at it first. However, they'er not. They spawned Sunday (8 days after the last spawn). I should start seeing if the 2 males did a better job at fertilizing soon. There's only a few non fertile eggs that I can see this morning, but it was the same way with the last spawn. So I should later tonight or by tomorrow morning if the boys figured it out yet. I want so badly to run to the local shop (nearby town) and tell the owner I have a proven pair of blacks spawning, so get ready! lol I have to resist though. I don't even know if these boys can get the fertilizing right, and until I have wrigglers I'm not giving hope to somebody yet. I know he's been waiting as long as I have for good angels around here, and he's been bugging me for years for angels and bettas. = ) I know I'd have no problem with selling off the offspring. ===================== Then go for it! :-) Here the chains can't buy fish from people like us and they're squeezing out the mom and pop places. AquaticCritter in Nashville sometimes buys from private people. His fish are the best there are, but a little high for us these days. My husband has been semi-retired for a year and just retired for good last month. So I'll have to go where the prices are best. Most likely the nearby PetsMart and PetSupermarket. PS has the lowest prices, healthy fish but a smaller selection. |

SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW......They do great work and have great craftsmen, but they are extremely slow paced. Thing is friends we talked to had no problems with contractors etc meeting the deadline and these guys are highly recomended. Now everyone says they are great but they take their own sweet time at doing it.....oh well at least they are on the job every day and they are working on a fixed price......At the rate they have all the floors being tiled it may take another couple of more months, In close to two months now, they are not even half way finished with the tile work, and they did not even paint the outside yet, or start onthe two elevated decks......which is not toomuch of a biggie as they did not even get the wood in yet and are still waiting for it to get shipped in. We canmove inwithout decks etc, but I do want the house inside finished at least so there is not any congestion once we do move in. Still have lots to go yet and odds are the July date is going to be missed..............but heck were heading down there at the end of this month for 2 more weeks, and then again end of June.for a few more weeks......We loaded up a container for shipment that will go by boat, so we have pretty well most everything that were taking already packed up and setting in the container in the yard.. We have a pond being constructed as well. It wil be for tropicals though not goldies or koi........It will have a large upper pond with a stream runing downgrade to a larger lower pond. Total gallons approx 6000 USG.....all free formed concrete with lots of ledges for plants and marginals etc........ |

Life there is slower than here anyway and as you said, things have to be shipped in. Do you think it would go faster if you were there staying in a Motel? You know, to put a little pressure on them. Don't forget to post some pics of the place once you're there. Pond and house. :-) |
