We have our lotus in a bog separate from the pond and this is the
first time we're developed buds (second summer for plant). The buds get large and develop petals but before it actually opens, the petals fall off. We have three buds and this has happened on two of them. The third one is still too small yet. We live in NW Indiana (zone 5) and we haven't had any harsh weather around the time this occurred (no strong winds or rain and no hail). We're so disappointed since we were looking forward all season to spectacular flowers. Any advice? Thanks. |

I know mine are not dog tolerant, and if the petals or bud even touches the water, forget about it. BV. |

Once the buds form on lotus, they briefly open early in the day to let
pollinators come and go, then close for the rest of the day, thats in a comfy temperature range of 70°f and 90°f in North Carolina. After two days of that kerplunk, the petals drop off. Try peaking at the lotus early in the day, perhaps? http://www.members.aol.com/abdavisnc/swglist.html http://community.webshots.com/user/adavisus (photo albums of aquatic plants and descriptions) (Jerrispond) wrote in message ... get large and develop petals but before it actually opens, the petalsfall off. Most all of the Lotuses are hardy to zone 4. That is alot colder
than your zone 5. Open only a few hours? This must be a variety thing, once mine open they
stay open and last for days. I usually remove the pedals when they droop down before they fall into the water. ~ jan On Fri, 15 Aug 2003 21:55:36 GMT, "RichToyBox" wrote: Are you home during the day??? The lotus blossom opens mid morning, and is only open for a few hours, so it is closed by mid afternoon. If you are not home, you will not see it bloom. From your description, it is opening, and you are just not there to see the bloom. The petals don't usually show up until they are ready to open, the first day they only partially open, the second day they are fully open, and the third day they open and drop the petals. Nedra I think it's either Double Rose (what the tag said) or it's Momo Botan. Coloring is similar to both, size is like what I'd expect the Momo Botan to be. ~ jan See my ponds and filter design: http://users.owt.com/jjspond/ ~Keep 'em Wet!~ Tri-Cities WA Zone 7a To e-mail see website |

Wow! I never heard of either a Momo or a Rosa opening and
staying open for Days ... You are very lucky! Nedra http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pines/4836 http://community.webshots.com/user/nedra118 "~ jan JJsPond.us" wrote in message s.com...
