Cory spawned!

My baby (now grown up) Corys spawned yesterday, I counted 88 eggs. The
other Corys were trying to eat the eggs, which I found very suprising.
I didn't know they did that. I hadda seperate em'

My water parms we 76 deg F, ~7dKH, ~7.5pH. I have recently let the
tank get a little dirty and fed lots of food with the addition of
mosquito larvae (SP?). I did a 30% WC with water at about 65 degrees,
7.0ph and 7dKH...... two days later they spawned.

Keep in mind that anything "I" did may have had nothing to do with the
eggs......

Pretty cool eh?

Sounds about right.... A good water change with cool water usually
does it for our cory's. They like the change, the fresh food....

I started two years ago with 3 cory's and have 15 now. I've only kept
a few eggs from a few spawnings. I've given away about 60 young'uns.

That IS really cool. I have 5 Corys. I wonder if I could be so lucky.

I started with (I presume) 2 males and 1 female in a 55 gallon tank.
They spawned to give me 3 consecutive batches of about 15 eggs (far as
I know). The first batch never hatched (my fault) the second batch
hatched but died (also my fault) and 12 of the 15 made it from the
third batch (March 28th of this year). I moved some around but I have 9
Corys in a 10 gallon tank of which at least two are female. It's pretty
funny to watch them swim actually. The tank is overfiltered because of
the load with several Java ferns and some Ambulia. So, I guess it took
em' six months to spawn from infancy. If ya wanna check out the whole
saga it begins on the second page of the updates on my Aquarium
page...... I don't remember how much detail is there.

I'll help ya as much as I can.... This is my second time through with
the Corys so I'm not an expert. Good Luck!

I've got 3 corys in my 55g planted tank. Other than their hairdo's,
how do you tell the mommies from the daddies?

The way I tell is if you feed them well the females will get FAT! Their
belly will distend from their body so far that the fish will have to
point nose first into the gravel before she can eat. This means she is
full of eggs, however it doesn't seem to mean she WILL spawn. If she
doesn't spawn, I don't know what happens to the eggs. Maybe she drops
them and they get eaten.

Anyhoo, I feed generously with large tropical flakes and add frozen red
worms several times a week. The red worms in my opinion is what
triggers the egg production. I'll feed for about two weeks like this
and skip my water change. The females should be fattening up. I make a
30% water change with cool water and presto! Eggs 1-2 days later. I
ain't no expert though so keep that in mind. If you get some eggs
you'll likely have to move them to another tank. And raising them is
another story.... Lemme know if you get that far.
