I'm setting up a 135 gallon reef tank. I get the tank from a friend
and it is not set up for a sump. Oceanic recommends agains drilling it as well. I had planned to set it up with a plenum as I have read many good things about them. Is there a better way to go? |

Yea, a deep sand bed instead of a plentium.

I went with the Deep Sand Bed the plentium sounded to complicated
and a bit unbelievable. Of course what do I know I've been using a canister filter up until 2 months ago. Get yourself lots of rock, lots of sand , a good protein skimmer and a reverse daylight refugium setup. Works great. No need to drill the tank, go on eBay and get a overflow box. Here is the one I use...it works great http://www.aquacrylics.com/new_acryl...ox_and_ski.htm Chris "jonus grumby" wrote in message ups.com... I'm setting up a 135 gallon reef tank. My overflow's syphon is a squarish smoked acrylic tube that I need to suck the air from every couple of weeks. I'd been thinking about replacing it with a clear plastic tube like the one shown. Does air accumulate in these as well? I've also thought about using two tubes. That way, I can pull and clean one without having to shut down the pump. |

It is a nice overflow, it works great and once the air is sucked out of the tube it doesn't re-enter. It's baffled on either side so the ends are always buried in water. I can shut it down and it starts back up every time. I thought the 2 tubes would be nice for redundancy. Clean it or if something gets stuck in one. maybe someday. Continuous Siphon Overflow I believe are the ones that have the air and restart problems. Mine has been running for a few months now and it looks cleans as the day I got it. That's how Pro Clear makes theirs.

This gives you more room to work with, ie if you want a second U tube, and it alows you to controle the hight of the water in the box, by the lenth of the pvc pipe you place in the drain pipe. Makes sense...I've seen one like that on http://www.melevsreef.com/
