Default brass fittings

Are brass fittings safe for use in an aquarium where they will come in
contact/be submerged in water? I have been using them on my plant grow
out tank to couple some tubing (couldn't find the right PVC
connections) and some of the filter fiber media has turned green (the
color of green that I associated with copper corrosion, think statue of
liberty shades of green). If I wanted to add algae eaters, would it be
safe?

brass will almost certainly leach copper - possibly in large amounts
particularly if your ph is low.

Stainless steel should be ok ifyou cant find the right ones in plastic.

Thanks! After about 15 seconds on Wikipedia, I realize that the copper
content is pretty obvious when talking about brass. This is what I get
for working in finance!!
