Ceramic tiles in the tank?

Hi all,

Thanks for all the help you've given me previously! This group has turned
out to be a great resource for me!

I'm now setting up a tank for my Zebra's. I want to use ceramic tiles as a
background, anybody got any experience with this? I'm thinking possible
poluting of the water. The tiles are not glazed, meant for use on floors.
The shop checked the papers to see if there's any chemicals used in the
manufacturing of the tiles, but couldn't find any evidence of this. Should I
risk it? They are natural looking burnt terra cotta tiles.

I wouldn't have thought there's be a problem. I have pieces of broken
terracotta plant pots in my tank (boiled and sharp edges sanded off, of
course) for about two weeks now, and they look very nice. Not had a problem
yet. But after all, the decision is up to you.

I was actually gonna ask the same question, I was thinking of the same idea.
But I thought, that to be 100% safe, I might go with tiles made of rock.
I'm thinking of using slate tiles from Home Depot to tile the back of my
55G. They are pure slate, come in about 8 different colours to choose from,
and are about $4-5CND per piece. The pieces are 12" by 12" so in a four
foot tank, they fit perfectly across, or at least I'm hoping, haven't tried
it yet. Plus I'm hoping by using real rock tiles, the joints won't be as
obvious as they can be with normal tiles.

Anyway, let us know if you go head with the idea, and which tiles you used.
Btw, where are you getting them from that they have papers on them?

I decided to do it. These are Italian tiles, made for flooring,

I bought them from a specialist tile store, and they have documentation of
all the tiles they sell. They wouldn't be allowed to sell them otherwise.
Tiles can have lead and other toxic materials in them, so could be harmful
to people as well.

The tank is set up, I have 5 tetras going there now to help cycle the tank.
They are happy so far, so I'm crossing my fingers

I hate to burst your bubble but a 4 ft. tank is 4 feet measured on the outside
.. 12 inch tiles will need to be cut to fit. However home-depot would probebly
cut them for you if it's only a few regards Art
