finicky severum

Hi... I'm getting desperate.

I have owned my Green Severum for about 4 years now, and while he's
always been a picky eater, lately he's just gotten worse.

I have a virtual graveyard of foods I've tried and he's rejected. The
only thing he'll eat right now is HBH Super Soft frozen food alternative
with krill for marine & freshwater fish. He'll eat that - sometimes.
One pellet will be fine, the next he'll spit out, then he'll eat another
one fine.

And that of course is when he SEES the pellet. He's either blind,
retarded, or both. He really only sees well on one side of his head, so
I have to drop the pellets, one by one, to places I think he'll see.

One of my fish-keeping friends keeps telling me if a fish gets hungry
enough, he'll eat. But that just seems cruel to me.

So, any help/suggestions/advice/recommendations?

who just make up answers without a clue.........Sinc ey have had this
fish for this ong, its only proper to look in a decent controlled
environement so yu do not get harmfull or dangerous ideas given to

I agree with your friend though, if a fish is hungry it will eat, and
eat what it is not nesessarily used to eating if need be.
Fish if in good condition can and will go for long periods without
eating, and contrary to what lots say its not necessary to feed every
day. I feed 3 times a week MAX unless my grand kids insist on seeing
them eat......

If a fish is being that picky it could be a sign of a greater problem. Is
the fish exhibiting any other outward signs of stress or disease? Are your
water parameters on spec?

You can try feeding him nutritious frozen foods like shrimp, bloodworm, and
krill--if he doesn't have any interest in that than there is probably
something wrong with him or your tank.

Healthy adult fish can go for several days without food without any
repercussions. In the wild fasting is normal as food is not necessarily
always available. It may take several days of fasting before the fish
takes a liking for other foods. Some large predatory fish sometimes go a
week without a meal.

I have had adult flowerhorns in the store that came in refusing to eat
anything that wasn't alive. By the time they sold they would happily
accept frozen foods and would grudgingly accept pellet based foods. These
were $400 and up fish; it wasn't easy on the conscious to let them go
without food, but in the end it worked to everyone's favour.

Is he thin? Does he look sick? Are his eyes bright and clear? Does he
respond to the light being turned on or off or a hand passing overhead?
What about your water conditions? Are they within the PH, DH and
temperature range to suit this fish? Is the tank large enough for him to
move around in? You really didn't tell us much.
