It seems to be a common theme recently. My filter died recently as well,
however it was only discovered last night at about 11pm. So today, I will be picking up a new one. Any recommendations?? My current tank is a 10 gallon Top Fin. I had a Top Fin 10 filter on there, but would like to change to something in which the filter media is seperate from the bacteria colony. Marcel |

I've never seen a Cascade. For quick & cheap, I like the AquaClears with double sponges (ie: the AC150 for you, I'm not a fan of the Mini), otherwise I'd go with a bio-wheel (Penguin 125?, I don't know what their Mini is like), and live with purchasing new inserts occasionally. Both provide either bacterial redundancy or separation. -- www.NetMax.tk |

it's a penn-plax, new filter that came out several months ago... I've got a
canister filter, you wouldn't believe how quiet and nice it is... then I got a HOT cascade 100 for a 10g, rated for 20 but has an adjustable flow.... waterfall effect, acts as an aerator, and cartridge, with a sponge, so it's comparable to anything, and better than alot... check 'em out... the only problem I've had so far, is finding replacement stuff, but for the canister that isn't an issue... -- | RedForeman ©® fabricator and creator of the ratbike streetfighter!!! | ========================== | 2003 TRX450ES | 1992 TRX-350 XX (For Sale) | '98 Tacoma Ext Cab 4X4 Lifted.... | ========================== | ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤° `°¤ø,¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø || ((((º`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·.¸. http://www.petguys.com/-030172016690.html for cartridges.
http://www.aquahobby.com/products/e_cascade.php for an unscientific sample review (maybe you should add your comments to it). Filter looks ok (can't really see any details). I like the grill to keep fish from doing the upstream escape. Probably better than having a cover which can rattle. I just don't like buying filter cartridges. It bugs me to pay for the loss of good nitrifying bacteria, and if I want fresh carbon, I want to just replace the carbon, not everything else (personal vice). thanks Red! -- www.NetMax.tk "RedForeman ©®" wrote in message ... it's a penn-plax, new filter that came out several months ago... It turned out to not be a good choice, but for reasons relating to the tank, not the filter. I was keeping the water level an inch or two low, so the filter splashing was rather loud. I also found that it was a bit much current for a betta tank. I've still got the Mini, but it's waiting for some other tank opportunity. For now, I've got a Duetto in the tank, which works pretty well, and is very quiet, and has adjustable flow rate and direction, so I don't tucker the poor little fish guys out. and live with purchasing new inserts occasionally. A blast with a garden hose is good for cleaning out the mechanical filtration pads, I've found. -- Eric Schreiber www.ericschreiber.com |

A blast with a garden hose is good for cleaning out the mechanical filtration pads, I've found. But how do you deal with the carbon? Do you have the model where the carbon is easily removable? Has anyone cut filter sponge to fit inside that compartment? Regarding the waterfall drop, in the past (on other filters) I've experimented with attaching an extension to the downspout to bridge the airgap. I think I got the best results using a piece of medium-heavy cloth, one end inside the filter (wedged around the media grill), and leaving about an inch of material under the tank's water surface. -- www.NetMax.tk -- Eric Schreiber www.ericschreiber.com |

Ah, good point, a garden hose doesn't do anything for the carbon. My main tank is heavily planted, and gets regular water changes, so I don't worry much about having fresh carbon. In the Eclipse systems, though, it's an easy enough thing to peel back the filter floss and replace the carbon if one cared to. Don't know about in the Penguin units - never tried it there. -- Eric Schreiber www.ericschreiber.com |

I have been running a Penquin Bio-Wheel Mini Filter in my 10 gallon for almost a year with no problems. The next largest size was too big to fit the opening on the tank cover. The Bio-Wheel is nicely covered with the gunk it needs and my water quality has been right on. Quiet, too. |
