Any suggestions on DIY bottom drain dome?

I've got the tetra 2" retrofit bottom drain installed now but it's not
really cutting it. I'm going to replace it with a 4" drain but want
to save some cash.

Any suggestions on what item I can use for the dome? One idea I guess
would be to use a black, round trash can lid, but I doubt it'll look
real good.

I wouldn't worry to much about looks, as it will soon be covered with
algae.

If you've noticed, all the covers for drains are "domes", not flat. The
reason for this has something to do with the amount of water that can run
through the drain being restricted by the reduced intake available with a
flat surface. Find one of the terra cotta "bowls" used for plants and make
PVC legs for it. They're heavy and the fish won't bang them around. Plug the
hole in the bottom with plumber's putty or the like. I have an air disk that
I'll run through the bottom hole to create an oxygen up-flow on mine, like
the "professional" domes.

One of the dome I saw had flat underside. My guess is that debris landing on the
dome would slide down to the side to be sucked into the bottom drain. Where as
if it was flat, the debris would sit atop.

Anyone here have a commercial bottom drain that does not have a flat underside
of the dome?

You might want to look at a the dome shaped squirrel guards they make for
birdfeeders. I haven't tried one but whenever I see one I think of a bottom
drain!
