I moved into a new house that is on well water and would like to install a
pond. I had a small pre-fab pond at my previous house and would like to build a larger pond this time (500-800 gal). Does anyone have experience building a new pond with well water? My water is pretty hard (about 90 on the hardness scale) with some iron. What affect will this have on the plants and fish? Could I fill the pond with water directly from the well, or could I use a mixture of softened water and well water? The softened water would be higher in sodium and potassium, but would be lower in hardness and iron. Any feedback would be much appreciated. |

My 900 gallon pond is filled with well water. However, I do have a
water softner. Plants and fish are doing well. On Sun, 29 Feb 2004 15:20:29 GMT, "Kyle" wrote: I moved into a new house that is on well water and would like to install a pond. Thanks Glenn! Do you know if your pond was filled with softened water? I
know on many homes, the outside faucets do not go through the water softener. So, if you filled it with a hose attached to an outside faucet, it may have been straight well water. Is your water very hard? Any iron or "orangish" color to it? Sorry for so many questions. Thanks for replying to my post. I sincerely appreciate any details you could share. I miss the pond at my old house! Lu;e "Glenn Lynn" wrote in message ... My 900 gallon pond is filled with well water. However, I do have a water softner. Plants and fish are doing well. Hi Kyle,
Don't worry about asking questions! That is how we get information. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Here goes with the answers. I built my house myself and I know the outside spigots are not filtered. First, I used the unfiltered water and had to drain the pond because of the color and fine particles of "mud" (?). Also had to scrub down the sides of the liner because the black had turned to brown. Consequently, the next time I filled the pond I ran a hose from an inside spigot. Whenever, I add water, I use "inside" water. I keep meaning to add an outside spigot that is filtered buy have not got around to it yet. Sorry I can't help you out with the hardness level of the water. It has been too long since it was tested for me to remember. However, if you draw a glass of unfiltered water, it is an orangish, brownish color. If you let it sit for a while, there is some sediment that settles out. If you put a white cloth in the water, it will turn rusty color. It is also hard to get soap suds with the unfiltered water. The only thing I put in my softener are those big salt crystals. Here is an idea for you that you may nnot have considered. Have one of those fellows that fill swimming pools fill your pond. Hope all of this helps. Ask more questions if you like.
