Angel Fish Growth Question

hey everyone,

I have a 30 gallon tank, about 7 angel fish - all kinds of colors. 4 barbs,
2 sharks, 2 bottom feeders and a pleco,

I cant understand why my angels do not grow. I feed them flake food in the
morning and at night i feed them either baby shrimp or bloodworms.

anyone have any suggestions to stimulate growth?

Fish are cold blooded, which means that their metabolism is largely
dependent on the surrounding temperature. A higher temp (low 80's) will
raise thier metabolism. In order for growth to flourish, you would also
need to feed accordingly.

Keep in mind, more food in = more waste. Water maintenance needs to be more
diligent under these conditions. Poor water conditions can also stunt
growth as well as produce sick fish.

So you can see it's a balancing game. Raise the temp and feed more? You're
also raising your chances of poor water quality and sick fish unless you
pick up on keeping the water quality high.

I have 10 Angels in my 120g since they were nickel size, and they have grown
nicely and peacefully at 76 degrees.

I don't doubt it. I was under the impression that the original poster was
hoping for accelerated growth. I don't recommend the process as mentioned
since you're practically inviting problems.

As for 10 Angels in a 120: Have you had any issues with territorial
agression during breeding? I would imagine that would be quite a sight
having 10 adult angels in a 120.

I'm just restarting my 240 and right now, I 'm not excited about how it's
turning out. Seems I have a bacterial bloom which has progressed into fin
rot for some fish. (even my angel) I'm considering keeping the UV on full
time but am worried about how it would affect the medication.

Hi, Mike - that sounds like an awful lot of fish for a 30-gallon. I
hope the sharks and the pleco are dwarf varieties, at least!?!? Maybe
the angels need more room in order to acheive their size. How
old/large are all these fish?

I tend to agree with Lisa, your tank would seem to be overloaded, One
question comes to mind, are we talking Imperial Gallon,s or American
gallons,

Growing fish need space, I only have 4, yes 4 Angles per 3 foot tank,
and nothing else in the tank, be they babies or full grown. All my tanks
are planted with undergravel filters and I also have a large exturnal
Canister filter I move round. As for feeding , Mine get Brine
shrimp,[frozan] and Spirulina flakes, I only feed Blood worms if I want
them to spawn. Blood worms tend to make them hyped up, and then they get
stroppy, or if there small, they will spawn, regardless of age.

If they grow, at some point a pair will form and the pair will beat the
other angels half to death. You'll have to separate them. Breeding pairs
are very territorial.

That's why I got fancy guppies instead of angel fish - angels are
territorial as a breeding pair and I want lots of fish rather than just
2. One thing I have noticed with my silver dollar/fancy guppy/ white
cloud mountain minnow/plants tank is that freeze dried daphnia (which
can be bought at 7 grams for 4-7 dollars approximately) trains your
fish to go bonkers when they think you are about ready to feed it to
them, because fish love daphnia, I use hikari brand freeze dried
daphnia as a supplement and my generation of fancy guppies in that tank
grew into adults very fast. You might want to try it. Later!

Large tanks are needed for real growth. My 2 are in 65g and have grown from
1" round body + fins to 3" round body + fins making them 9" tall. I feed
mine 3 times a day, only what they eat in 30 seconds, and very rarely use
flake, prefering bloodworm, brine shrimp, tubeflex, krill (all frozen then
thawed a little). I can only get live bloodworm or daphnia and they love
that too.
Depending on the size of the other fish, your tank is/will be overstocked
will lead to agression sooner or later.
Clean water is vital for angels to grow too, and they need regular water
changes...2 or 3 times a week. Mary

This is the thing with only having a small number of fish per tank, The
water does not require changeing as often , I am not saying that water
changes are unnecessary, But you don't need to change that much, that
often.
