I don't know how many people are reading this NG but will ask anyway. What
kind of GF are you keeping? Orandas? Shubunkins and comets? Which are
your favorites? How long have you been keeping GF?

I have 2 black Moors, 3 calico Orandas, a nice quality gold bubble eye, a
calico telescope eye and 6 small red and white nacreous pearlscales I hope
to breed someday. I also have loads of nice Shubunkins both outside and in
the sunroom in a 55 gal tank. I'm lusting after a chocolate pompom I saw at
PetsMart...... :-) I need to take pics and update my website.

One white fantail, which was purchased with and for my daughter 9 years
ago together with another goldfish that's since died. We thought that
goldfish were "easy" fish . This was the first time I kept goldfish.

Two comet-shaped shubunkins that hatched in my brother's pond in 1999. I
like the shubunkins for their colours and their active nature.

## I see you quickly found out they're not all that easy and need roomy
tanks with good filtration. Wow, 9 years! You must be doing something
right. :-))

## I agree! I have many of them in 150g kiddy pools out behind my house
where I breed them. I also have some of the best young ones in my 55g tank
in the sun-fishroom. This is a room with large south and west facing
windows that exists only for my fish and tropical houseplants. There are
extra supports under the floor. Most of my tanks are in this room.

I'm a sometime poster, much more often lurker with a single 7 year-old
common male who's about 7 inches at this point.

My first fish was a comet and I've always liked them, but I like the
hardiness and fish-like-ness of commons. I like big fish, so I'm
looking forward to keeping koi when I get some property to build a pond
on. (Not an imminent prospect in Los Angeles.) I might get more into
fancy goldfish as I'm still feeling my way... but I'd probably even
keep steelhead if I could!!

I love the "fish shaped" GF as well and have many Shubunkins, both outside
and inside the house. If you have the space you can keep GF in those $10
kiddy pools from Wal*Mart. A cheap black dropcloth hides the ugly glaring
color and cartoons. :-) They'll fit in a small yard or even on a balcony or
porch. You can easily keep 8 to 10 adults in one of these shallow pools or
2 koi until they out grow it. I've always had tropical fish and goldfish,
but I'm finding I like the GF more than the tropicals, especially the fancy
GF. I find myself keeping less tropicals and more GF these days.......

I'd love that! I live in the Houston metro area--very hot in summer. Do
you think they'd live in shallow pools here? I'm afraid it would get too
hot.

I live in the Nashville area of TN and we get some wicked heat here in
summer. I shade these small pools with water lettuce, water hyacinth and
small water lilies. The fish will hide under them where the water is a few
degrees cooler. If the water reaches 90F I cover them with old curtains.
Heat can be a problem, there is no doubt, but I've had the fish live through
a heat wave where the water temps reached 94F! I do have small pumps and
filters running in each pool. They aerate the water which helps. Goldfish
and koi are amazingly adaptable.

You can always grow some type shrub or a small tree on the south side of the
pool and or add water lettuce etc as I do to help hold the water temperature
down.

I was thinking of that. I have some trees and shrubs I need to plant--I'll
place them accordingly.
Thanks!
