Nori sheets for plecos and other algae eaters

I feed all my algae eaters be it the large snails or flying fox,s and
pleco etc nori algae sheets......They like it much better than the
typical algae waffers and its much cheaper as well. I can get 12
sheets 9 x 12 of nori for $1.25 a pack at the local oriental market. I
use a magnetic clip or rubber band it to a stone after I roll it up
some, and drop it in the tank........Don;t foul the water if its there
for a few days either, and I find lots of other fish that usually are
fed nothing but reg fish food nibble at it as well.

Interesting idea ). Googling only found some cautions about not buying
flavoured or spiced nori at grocery stores, that some types can elevate
the phosphate levels in a tank, and some types can be a bit messy to work
with. Basically marine seaweed. I'll have to swing by Chinatown to try
some ;~).

with. Basically marine seaweed. I'll have to swing by Chinatown to try

All to the good for you to get some nori, but how about getting some
for your fish??? g

I keep algae tabs on hand, but don't give them to the fish. The fish
love the things, but my tanks go cloudy until the next water change.

I feed my silver dollars hikari algae wafers daily (2 in the morning and 1
in the evening) and it has NOT ever clouded my water as far as I know. It's
good stuff, I agree with elaine. Much recommended.

Hikari hasn't clouded mine either, but neither has the other ones I've
tried (NutraMax and Jungle?), however the fish had a slight preference
for Hikari (expensive tastes!). Nori sounds much cheaper. I'm presuming
that marine plants are like marine fish and they don't have elevated
levels of salt in them (I don't want to be giving my fish high blood
pressure ;~).

No, I haven't Elaine. I have to order everything over the Internet.
Shopping for one item is expensive due to shipping. I will put it on
my list and see if it is available next shopping browse.

I didn't look at the wafers I now have before writing the first reply.
The wafers I now have are Hikari. Most of my fish relish the wafers.
They don't last more than a few hours, but all of my tanks get a milky
look. Darn! : - (

Flavored or spiced nori I guess could cause those problems, but the
100% natural as harvested nori does not present those problems. I feed
my tangs a continuous supply of it as well and its never caused an
algae outbreak in SW and never have had a alagae outbreak in fw
either. Other than it being ground and processed in to a tablet form
mainly for ease of feeding since all you have to do is drop the tablet
in and it sinks unlike a nori sheet which would floar, I would have to
think that wafers could cause an algae outbreak just the
same......since there is more fillers used like binders to hold the
tablets together.....

I'm not really sure what the source of phosphates could be, but I tend to
agree that it's more likely to come from an artificial source
(processing/preservatives?), than from natural source. In any case, it
wouldn't be difficult to put some in a glass and test for phosphates after a
few days, if this was a concern.
