20 years ago, for all intents and purposes, they didn't, at least not
for long, or with any huge degree of success. From what I've read,
most of the tech we use for our marine tanks has been developed in
the fairly recent past.

Default Question?????

20-25 yrs ago, we were lucky if we could keep an anemone for 6 months! Fish
and some inverts we could keep, but not much more. We used to keep very
"sterile" tanks (bleached coral pieces), siphon the crushed coral
undergravel filters. These may be operated in a reverse flow.
We might let the back wall fill up with algae. A DE filter was really high
tech!
I then dropped out for a while, and then we started seeing some of the
wet/dry, then the skimmer and the various current techniques
