I have a battery 'backup' pump so the water is being move somewhat....... SickBoy If you have a canister filter, I'd dump it, and float the media in the tank if the outage last more than a couple hours. I don't know how long it takes, but they can go anerobic, dumping poison into the tank when power returns. The bacteria in your filter media can die from lack of ammonia to eat as well. Good job having the battery op pumps. I take it you live in the NE US? Loks pretty bad, though that may just be media hype. |

I was on line trying to post and listening to Sean Hanity when it went
out. Even tho we didn't loose it here in Va, it took over four hours for my posts to show up. I sure hope everyone who lost power are able to take care of their fish and know one looses any. Vicki |

See all the advice I was given after the event... if you have a cannister and it's been off for more than a couple of hours, wash it (in dechlorinated water) to kill off any anaerobic bacteria, then keep the filter media in the main tank where they can get at oxygenated water... I think that was the main advice I received... Yeah, was definately interesting, we got power back at 3am, so wasn't that
bad, only 11 hours. Changed 10% of the water twice, and opened the lids, scooped water into the filters every now and then to keep that water fresh. I disconnected the fluval, but when the power came back on, I woke up, stirred up the canister, opened it and sniffed it, smelled like normal skanky filter, no sulpher, so fired it back up with no probs. Overall, went over quite well. Don't know what I would have done if the power would have stayed out until Monday like they were predicting. We definately were not prepared, had enough candles for one night, batteries for maybe two nights for the flash lights, but food, everything we had was perishable. We here in the south keep hurricane kits in the event of one of them
storms knocking out our power for a week or so. With the power grid thing up there it may be a good idea for ya to stock up on bottled water (pumps work on electricity unless gravity fed) 1g per person per day, extra batteries, candles, non perishable foods that don't need heating up, portable radio, and a months worth of meds. As an avid camper I have a portable propane stove which may not be a bad idea for folks to get if you use electric stoves. Then at least you could have a hot meal. Vicki In case this happens this winter a sleeping bag may be a good thing to keep warm. |
