Fluval 1 internal filter too turbulent for 5G quarantine?

Hi,

Alas, all efforts to cure my poor gourami is not helping at all... and
now that I will start attempt using harsher chemicals that may be toxic
to other fish and plants (I was treating the whole tank assuming it is
contageous and bacterial and want to make sure all other fish won't
develop this problem), I am in the process of setting up a quarantine
tank and move the really sick gourami and another one that is
suspicious into it.

now, I have a 5G tank to use for quarantine.. everything is set up
except the filter (it's running without fish to stabilize temperature).
it has those air pump driven sponge filter, but it's so darn noisy
(when I first set up a q-tank for my danios, I had a cascading power
filter for the main tank so the buzzing noise wasn't all that
noticable.. but now I have a canister, so the buzzing noise of the pump
is permeating throughout the room..), I'm thinking about buying a small
interal filter to quiet it down.

I've been eyeing Fluval 1 internal filter for this... has rating of
50gph flow rate. is this too turbulent for quarantine tank? I can't
find any other internal filter that is of lower flow rate that would be
sufficient for a 5G tank... (Duetto has flow rate higher than Fluval
1, although the possibility of putting in carbon to filter out meds
occasionally might be useful.. but I guess in a Q-tank i'd just do lots
of water changes instead)

any thoughts?

I use a Fluval 1 in my 7.5 (UK) gall hex tank - it is fairly well
submerged so doesn't disturb the surface water too much...I haven't
noticed too much turbulance....You can also adjust the flow on these if
it is too much or too little...not noticed too much noise on
these....the Fluval 1 is in my living room and I don't hear as much as a
whisper out of the thing...It is also dead easy to switch filter medium
in these things - I've added carbon on top of the usual sponges without
having to reduce anything on the bio front...just slip it inbetween...

I use the mini Aquaclears for my 5 and 10g tanks. They're just about dead
silent and the flow is adjustable. Sponges last for ages and the filters
themselves are all over 10 years old now.

I too have used fluval internal filters (also the Via Aqua 302; And the
305, 306, which also diffuse air into the tank), they all work well. I
would like mention to make sure and rinse your sponges in declorinated
water or tank water (then throw the water away), so as to not destroy
the bacterial colony in your sponge. Also try and use the air injection
feature available on many internal power heads (the Fluval does not
have this feature).

why is air injection good? is it to increase agitation for better
oxygen in the water? it makes it noisy doesn't it though?

another quick question. I looked for via aqua 302.. and can't find it.
this is internal filter? the only via aqua i found was air pump...

Yes, air injection does make added noise, but I beleive the added
benefits of oxygenation override the noice. The redox potential is also
increased (the oxidation properties of water).
Most stores that sell Via Aqua products carry thier internal filters, I
know they show up on MSN. American Aquarium Products carries them
starting at $8.99 for the 302. PS the 302 DOES NOT have the air
injection feature, but the 305 & 306 do.
