Default spawning fun

This past week I have had nothing but betta trouble, my fish did not want to
spawn, h*ll, I had two that decided they wanted to be friends and play
instead of doing what I wanted them to...ugh
Finally I found two who seemed to be ready, except the female is a bit of a
witch with a "B", my male built this big nice bubble nest, I left her in the
glass an extra day because I got busy and forgot..opps...so his nest got
very big, my husband said frustration...she had stripes and was well fed so
I let her out, she went over and the first thing she did was try and destroy
his nest, which she did mess up half of it, so this poor guy was doing his
best at blowing another half, he looked pretty well exhausted when she
decided she was ready...figures, so they start to spawn, every time he lets
her go she floats up into the nest...this poor betta if he could talk you
would have to take children out of the room...So about six hours later they
were done and even if they were not I think he had his hands a little full,
to many eggs not enough bubbles because of the little witch, so now he has
spent last night and today catching eggs and trying to keep his nest
together, I see some eggs beside the bubble nest that are not in bubbles and
he is doing his best but I think he is starting to think "maybe I should of
ate them"
so thought you guys might enjoy hearing about his journey into parenthood.
Since this was his first time, I don't know if we will end up with fry or
not but I will let you know tomorrow
Nik
Oh and the best was the look on this bettas face when he is going down to
pick up eggs after she released them and she is sneaking up top to try and
eat them, lol.. what a mother

Nikki, your story is hilarious. I have never seen the 'spawning'
rituals of betta's but I now have a great picture in my head. Such a
shame you couldn't have made a film :-)

I wish I could of got it on video, my poor guy is so tired
I am hoping tomorrow or the next day he can come out of the spawning tank
and back to his own tank, His first encounter with parenthood was not a good
one, or at least everything leading up to it, now he is struggling to keep
the eggs in the nest.
When they spawn I keep the female in a glass lantern at least for a day or
two, and it gives him time to build his nest, for the most part he will nip
at her when she comes out (or in this case she will nip at him and destroy
his nest) when she is ready she will go under the nest face down, he will
wrap his body around hers to squeeze the eggs out and fertilize them I
assume, which is so neat to see, he is completely bent in half, after the
eggs fall he will let go and catch what he can and pick the rest up from the
bottom.. she will float to the top for a few seconds (as if she is dead), in
that time he is picking the eggs up in his mouth and taking them to the
nest...its pretty cool to see their colors during this time, this female is
a dark blue and she almost looked metallic during spawning, with stripes
going up & down instead of long ways. as soon as they are done he will turn
on her quickly so then you just got to get her out of the tank and baby her
because she will be a bit beat up, then he takes it from there if he is a
good dad, once they start swimming he comes out of the tank also. then you
have a tank full of tiny tiny fry...then the work starts

Would love to see it. What do you do with all the fry? How many eggs
does he put in the nest roughly and how many survive? You could make
movies and sell them on the internet. There maybe people out there
with a 'betta fettish' :-)

I think everyone who has betta's has a betta fettish...lol
They have such personalities, I only started getting females not to long ago
but found out they are just as fun as males...I call them my girls and my
husband knows which im talking about, as i do have other all female tanks.
I will give some away to friends and family, that is why i decided to breed
them because i had a lot of people asking plus i want females and for the
most part the ones being carried at the lfs dont look to great, all though i
always check just in case...I might find some I like. I dont know how many i
will end up with being this was both the male & females first time so we
will see....I went in a hour ago and noticed daddy betta was no longer just
swimming down and picking up the eggs he was now chasing them, because they
were leaving, was very suprised being they only spawned yesterday
morning/afternoon, I put a little plant
in there i had in one of my bigger tanks because there is always some
infusoria on them, so there will be some in the tank for them to eat, i am
not going to feed till tomorrow i guess...
