Default Lighting Question

Hi,
I want to upgrade my lighting. I am looking at 2 units right now please give
me input on them if you can:

1)Coralife 36" Lunar Aqualight Fixture plus LED Lights--- 36" with 96 watt
10.000K Daylight and 96 watt True Actinic 03 Blue Compact Fluorescent Lamps
plus two 3/4 watt Lunar Blue-Moon-Glow LED 470nm Lamps.

2) 36" Nova Extreme 4x39W T5 HO w/3 Lunar----There are two 460nm Actinic
Blue, two Daylight 10,000k Slimpaq T5 lamps, 3 Lunar lights, 4 Lunar lights
and docking mounts are included.

Both lights are about $200. I think there is more "bang to the buck" in the
Novas, but I was leaning toward the Coralife because it seems to have a
wider distribution (I thought that would be easier to get replacement
parts).

Also--I now have a 42 watt fixture (21w Flor/21 Watt Act). I have enough
room over my tank to fit the new lights and the old. The new 192 watts + the
old 42 watts brings me to 234 watts for 65 gallons. Is that sufficient for
"Moderate Light" Corals? Is it sufficient for a Bubble-Tip Anemone?

I also have another 44 watt florescent light, I might be able to fit all 3.

thanks again...................

Great, I'll watch this thread. I am leaning towards the Nova Extreme myself
but the comparison is interesting.

T5 rocks. Look for higher output, though, if you're growing corals.

Nearly forgot; yes, the setup above is more than sufficient for your
critters.

Default Lighting Question

If you are going to go with T5's go with the Tec 36" fixture. With
T5's the reflectors are KEY. The Nova fixture has only 1 straight
fixture. The Tec has individual parabolic fixtures for each bulb which
will be MUCH brighter.

That's 3.6 watts per gallon.
I would not call that moderate light, I would call that
low light.

When you hit 4 watts per gallon I would then call that
moderate light.

Ideal is 5 to 6 (I have 6.6) watts per gallon for a nice
coral reef.

Softies will grow fine under the 3.6 watts per gallon.

Stonies will grow, but will have less vigor, and will tend
to get ailments.

Also,

What are the dimensions of your tank? Watts / gallon isn't all that
accurate. Deeper tanks need more light (depending on what you want to
keep).

Default Lighting Question

My tank is 65 gallon ---36" X 24" X 18".

The tank is under a beam---so fixture would have to lie directly on hood
glass.
have 3 1/4 " clearance under the beam.
I could put lights on front half of tank where there is no beam. I wouldnt
have to worry about clearance----but would light efficiently reach the back
where all the rock is piled?
My budget is about $200. Ive been looking at the Nova, Coralife, Sattelite
and Orbit Fixtures---all about 192 watts.
thanks for your time.

Default Lighting Question

I'm not sure that 192w of PowerCompact lighting will let you keep what
you want in that tank. I would HIGHLY reccomend going with the 36"
fixture from Aquatinics.

http://www.aquactinics.com/

This might be more than you want to spend, but you'll be able to keep
just about anything.

Also, check out Reef Centrals thead by the Grim Reefer. He has done a
lot of reasearch on the PAR ratings of T5's.

How about getting yourself a retro florescent, and then
building your own hood?
