36W - 38W 48'' - 42'' ( 1'' DIA )
is this controller unit any good for a 2ft tank or is it too powerfull.

I don't think it should be a problem. It might be brighter than you
need, and it might lead to excessive algae growth. If you're
planning a planted tank it could even be what you need.

Try reading the Lighting section at The Krib for more helpful
information.

It might have more information that you might find helpful. Also,
as always, try googling.

Alternatively, you might also want to browse The Freshwater Aquarium

Fish lovers, the most basic equipment kit aquarium fish lamp, fish tank filters, water heaters, a good marine reef aquarium fish tank is good. It may shock you, but part of the aquarium lighting system of basic knowledge.

Metal halide lamp is still a very popular choice. It provides an attractive flash effects, make you grow almost any type of coral.
