Has anyone ever used this product or know anything about it? It says it
removed Nitrate, Nitrite and Ammonia, but does it really work or is it
just another gimmick?

I've never used it or tested it, but I think people
have fond it to work. I think it bonds with the
gases, but I have my doubts that it completely takes
it out, probably just converts it into a less toxic
form, then bacteria slowly breaks it down.

It's used most often to ship fish because there is no or limited
biological filtration in a plastic bag. However, I'd be reluctant to
use it in an aquarium although this website says the results are harmless.

"This is why AmQuel has proven so useful in shipping fishes."

I don't think I have this brand, but I have a similar product around
that I used when I was treating a gray angel with antibiotics. I also
did a 40% water change daily before dosing with the antibiotics and the
ammonia control.

I used to set up my first tank. I was using tap water then to make my own
sal****er. My tank was healthy.

Now I have a reef and try not to used chemicals to treat water. As a matter
of fact I still have a couple of bottles of amquel.
I think chemicals stress the inhabitants in the tank, even the ph
powder/liquid, specially on the invertebrates. Fish are more tolerant to
them.

Back then, It was recommended to me by my LFS to be the best brand in the
market.

What exactly are you planning to use this product on? What's the problem?
Perhaps some water changes, less overfeeding and a piece of restrained macro
algae (away from your tangs) could do the job. Sometimes we overlook small
things like water movement : cleaning the pump/powerhead/canister
filter/chiller to max their output. I do vacuum the sand/rock every now and
then.

Good luck,

Ruben

I was having a problem with my Nitrates in my FOWLR. After a Partial WC
My Nitrates were 20 ppm I did another Partial change and still hovering
between 15 - 20 ppm. I began looking for anything that could help and
came across Amquel + it says it would reduce nitrates 12 ppm and after
3 days of use, I saw no results. I did some more research and found a
few other techniques that have no adverse affect on my fish.
SO I will give this a shot and see how it works.

That product that I was talking about was seachem's stability. Get a
small bottle, as you just need a few ml to kick off a tank. It just has
the bacteria you need to get a tank going. Or, borrow a gallon of water
from a buddy's tank. Same thing.

How big is your tank? How much live rock? Sand bed? How long has it
been setup? Livestock?

If you FOWLR is overpopulated, you may need to get a nitrate reactor
(ie, build your own per wayne's instructions). I'd use sulfer granule,
pump, drip gate.

My tank is 7 years old
75 Gal w/ 85 lbs of LR 3 - 4 in DSB I'm using a Canister Filter,
Protein Skimmer I don't have a lot of fish.
3 worm Gobys,
4 Yellow Tail Damsels
1 Coral Beauty Angel
1 Powder Blue Tang
2 Tomato Clown
2 Bristle Stat Fish
Unknown amount of Blue Hermits and Turbo Snails (Less then 10 each)
3 Peppermint Shrimp (Although I haven't seen 2 of them for a while)

Does Wayne have the nitrate reactor on his web site?

I thought he discussed it earlier about converting your canister to a
nitrate reactor. I jumped in and offered the drip gate idea.

You should be okay on livestock, etc. I'd go with seachem's stability.
I had big issues with nitrates before used that.

I don't have one on my site, nor do I use one on my
tank, I have done experiments with sulfur, and those
experiments were interesting. I feel that it would
be better not to use sulfur for a denitrifier.

I have been thinking of building an anaerobic filter
for experimental purposes. I don't have a nitrate
problem, but I think that an anaerobic filter might
prove beneficial in removing dissolved organic
carbons from the water. I did do an experiment with
a 5 gallon bucket that seemed to show evidence
towards that, but that was just a sealed bucket
without an filtration, that was made to go
anaerobic. The experiment was not sufficient to
prove my theory.

When I do water changes, I make the new water
slightly saltier than the tank water. I'll make it 1
to 2 degrees saltier. Then I pump the new water in
through a vinyl hose that goes down to the bottom of
the tank with a sock (yes one of my own socks) on
the end. The new water goes across the bottom, and
the old water goes down the overflow. The pump that
normally pumps the water from the sump to the tank,
is switched to pumping that water to the bath tub.
